Am I a Candidate?

SELECTION CRITERIA

There are a number of widely accepted criteria which make a patient suitable for Bariatric or Weight Loss Surgery.
Patients should note that the Selection Criteria for LAPAROSCOPIC ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING surgery is slightly different to that for SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY and GASTRIC BYPASS surgery.

For LAPAROSCOPIC ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING the Selection Criteria are as follows:

  • BMI of 35 or more
  • BMI greater than 30 with at least 1 major obesity related disease eg. Diabetes, Asthma, Heart Disease, Sleep Apnoea , Osteoarthritis.
  • Acceptable operative risk
  • Reasonable attempts at other weight loss techniques in the past
  • A capacity to understand the risks and commitment associated with the surgery
  • Dedicated to life-style change and follow up

For LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY and GASTRIC BYPASS the Selection Criteria are as follows:

  • BMI of 40
  • BMI greater than 35 with at least with 1 major obesity related disease eg. Diabetes, Asthma, Heart Disease, Sleep Apnoea , osteo arthritis.
  • Acceptable operative risk
  • Reasonable attempts at other weight loss techniques in the past
  • A capacity to understand the risks and commitment associated with the surgery
  • Dedicated to life-style change and follow up


In addition patients must have:

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Have No Endocrine cause for their obesity
  • Absence of drug or alcohol problem
  • No uncontrolled psychological conditions

Your suitability for surgery will be determined after a formal discussion with Dr Michael Hatzifotis.
