Early Release of Superannuation
Who can Apply for Early Release of Superannution?
Bariatric Patients may apply for Early Release of Superannuation based on ‘Compassionate Medical Grounds’, to cover the out of pocket costs associated with surgery.
To be eligible for Compassionate Release of Superannuation to pay for your Out of Pocket expenses, you must meet the strict eligibility requirements below:
- You require medical treatment
- The condition is a life threatening illness (Obesity)
- The medical treatment is not readily available through the public health system
How to Apply for Early Release of Superannuation
To apply for Early Release of Superannuation you will need to register for a "myGov" account. For further information visit the Australian Taxation Office website at www.ato.gov.au/earlysuper
In order to submit an application, you must provide the ATO with the following documentation:
- Letter from Dr Michael Hatzifotis addressed to the Australian Taxation Office
- Document NAT 74927 completed by Dr Hatzifotis
- Quote for out-of-pocket costs from Dr Hatzifotis
- Quote for out-of-pocket costs from Anaesthetist
- Quote from Greenslopes Private Hospital for Accommodation/ Theatre fees etc.
- Document NAT 74927 must be completed by your GP (Document NAT 74927 can be downloaded from Australian Taxation Office at https://www.ato.gov.au/Forms/Compassionate-release-of-superannuation---Report-by-registered-medical-practitioner)
You can apply online, or you can request a paper application form. Please be aware that applications may take up to 28 days to process. It is a patient’s responsibility to follow up on their applications.

If you can’t apply online, complete the paper application form. It is advisable to photocopy your documentation before posting. Please send your application form and the supporting documentation by ‘Registered Post’ to the mailing address below:

Please note:
The Australian Taxation Office will NOT approve your application if you pay for your surgery from other fund sources prior to your surgery date.
You must have your application processed and approved, and funds released by your Superannuation fund at least one week prior to your surgery date.
Processing time is approximately 28 business days, so please start your application as soon as possible, and continue to follow up your application with the ATO if you do not hear from them within two weeks from lodging your application.
