UNINSURED BARIATRIC SURGERY COSTS
BARIATRIC SURGERY WITH NO PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE
You must have Top/Gold cover with a Private Health Fund to be eligible to have Weight Loss surgery at Greenslopes Private Hospital. If you do not have Top cover, then you will be responsible to pay for the full costs of the surgery, including the Hospital's, the Surgeon's, the Anaesthetist's and the Assistant Surgeon's fees.
As an Uninsured patient, you will face significant out-of-pocket expenses, however, you may choose the following options to help fund your surgery:
- Self Funded - If you have the available funds to pay for the costs associated with surgery, then you may use your own funds to pay the out-of-pocket fees upfront. See the fees below for an estimate of costs involved. Medicare Rebates apply.
- Medicare Rebate - Medicare will provide some rebates for Bariatric surgery and will cover a portion of the Surgeon's fee based on the relevant Medicare item number for the procedure performed. See the fees below for applicable rebates
- Get Private Health Insurance/upgrade to Gold Cover - Become a member of a Health Fund and serve the 12 months wait period or increase your Health cover to include bariatric surgery
- Superannuation - Apply for Early Release of Superannuation on compassionate grounds, to cover the costs. There is a strict application process, and you must meet certain criteria. The Out-of-Pocket Costs outlined below are ESTIMATES ONLY and will vary depending on providers, how many visits, length of procedure, length of stay, if ICU is required and if any rebates apply. An accurate quote will be organised once a surgery date and surgical team has been booked.

COMPREHENSIVE FEE BREAKDOWN:
SURGEON'S FEE:
Dr Michael Hatzifotis: $4,000 - $8,915 (Medicare Rebates apply depending on the procedure, see above for rebate)
Includes:
- A non-refundable booking fee/deposit of $500
- All Follow up appointments & Aftercare Program for at least 3 years following surgery or as required. Follow up appointments will be primarily with Dr Hatzifotis. Some follow up appointments will also be with Dr Tarn Montagu, our Specialist Bariatric General Practitioner.
- Follow up Appointments include:
- 3 week post operative appointment
- 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, 12 month
- After 12 months every 6-12months for at least 3 years or as required
- Administrative support and management/co-ordination of multi-disciplinary treatment and care
- Organisation and review of regular scheduled post operative blood tests
- Any further procedures should this be required following weight loss surgery, including: Hernia surgery, Cholecystectomy surgery (removal of gallbladder: 5-10% of patients)
- Further surgery should any complications arise
- Any re-admissions to hospital relating to weight loss surgery
- INCLUDED IN THE PHM FEE IS A NON-REFUNDABLE BOOKING FEE/DEPOSIT OF $500.
- THE NON-REFUNDABLE BOOKING FEE/DEPOSIT OF $500 IS PAYABLE 7 DAYS AFTER BOOKING SURGERY.
- THE REMAINING BALANCE OF THE PHM FEE IS PAYABLE TO OUR PRACTICE, 1 WEEK PRIOR TO SURGERY.

- We have 3 regular Anaesthetists who work on alternating weeks.

- The Anaesthetist's fee is payable to their practice. You will need to contact their practice to confirm fees.
Dietitian Fee: $160 - $400
- At least 4 required visits:
- 1-2 x Pre Surgery Consultations
- 3 x Post Surgery Consultations
- Initial Consultation: $160 (Fees are payable to Dietitian on day of appointment)
- Follow up Consultations: $90 (Fees are payable to Dietitian on day of appointment)
- Further Dietitian appointments are available if required or requested

- GP Team Care Arrangements (TCA) are accepted. Please discuss eligibility with your GP
Psychologist Fee: $240 - $350
