Weight Loss Surgery 

Uninsured Bariatric Patient


You must have Top/Gold cover with a Private Health Fund to be eligible to have Weight Loss surgery at Greenslopes Private Hospital. If you do not have Top cover, then you will be responsible to pay for the full costs of the surgery, including the Hospital's, the Surgeon's, the Anaesthetist's and the Assistant Surgeon's fees. 


Medicare will provide some rebates for Bariatric surgery and will cover a portion of the Surgeon's fee based on the relevant Medicare Benefits Schedule item number for the specific bariatric procedure performed  ie: Gastric Sleeve #31575, Gastric Bypass #31572.


Uninsured patients will face significant out-of-pocket expenses. If you are eligible for Weight Loss Surgery but do not have the available funds to pay for the costs associated with surgery, then you may have the option of applying for Early Release of Superannuation on compassionate grounds, to cover these costs.  There is a strict application process, and you must meet certain criteria. As an Uninsured patient, you may choose the following options to fund your surgery:

  • Self Funded - Use own funds to pay the out of pocket fees upfront
  • 12 Month Wait Period - Become a member of a Health Fund and serve the 12 months wait period
  • Superannuation - Apply for Early Release of Superannuation

  • Follow up Appointments include:
  • 3 week post operative appointment
  • 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, 12 month
  • After 12 months every 6-12months for at least 3 years or as required
  • Administrative support and management/co-ordination of multi-disciplinary treatment and care
  • Organisation and review of regular scheduled post operative blood tests
  • Any further procedures should this be required following weight loss surgery, including:
  • Hernia surgery
  • Cholecystectomy surgery (removal of gallbladder: 5-10% of patients)
  • Further surgery should any complications arise
  • Any re-admissions to hospital relating to weight loss surgery
  • INCLUDED IN THE PHM FEE IS A NON-REFUNDABLE BOOKING FEE/DEPOSIT OF $500.

  • Surgeon’s fee (Fee is applicable if original weight loss surgery was performed by Dr Michael Hatzifotis)
  • A non-refundable $500 booking fee/deposit
  • All Follow up appointments & Aftercare Program for at least 3 years following surgery or as required. Follow up appointments will be primarily with Dr Hatzifotis. Some follow up appointments will be with Dr Tarn Montague, our Specialist Bariatric General Practitioner.
  • Follow up Appointments include:
  • 3 week post operative appointment
  • 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, 12 month
  • After 12 months every 6-12months for at least 3 years or as required
  • Administrative support and management/co-ordination of multi-disciplinary treatment and care
  • Organisation and review of regular scheduled post operative blood tests
  • Any further procedures should this be required following weight loss surgery, including:
  • Hernia surgery
  • Cholecystectomy surgery (removal of gallbladder: 5-10% of patients)
  • Further surgery should any complications arise
  • Any re-admissions to hospital relating to weight loss surgery
  • INCLUDED IN THE PHM FEE IS A NON-REFUNDABLE BOOKING FEE/DEPOSIT OF $500.

  • 1-2 x Pre Surgery consultations

  • Initial Consultation: $150  (Fees are payable to Dietitian on day of appointment)
